3 COMMONEST ERRORS IN NIGERIAN ENGLISH

1. MANY/MUCH:

Many is used for count nouns and much is used for non-count nouns. It is therefore wrong to say: much students. The students are not much(wrong). The students are not many(right)

2. DOUBLE COMPARISON:

Positive adjectives are used for single items/persons(good), comparatives are used for two(better) and superlatives are used for three or more(most). Having two comparative adjectives such as: more better, more taller, more finer is wrong. Kunle is tall. Femi is taller than Kunle(not more taller)

3. Am/ I’m/ I am:

‘Am’ is a verb. It can not start a sentence unless we are asking a question, e.g., Am I your friend? When we  make statements, we should use ‘ I am’: I am a teacher. However, when we contract, we can say I’m, not am. I’m happy(not, am happy). I’m is used in informal contexts, so ‘am’ can’t be another informal choice. It is outright wrong.
