On the word “hang”

When this word means for something to be suspended from above with the lower part dangling free, the past tense is “hung” so is the past participle.
I hung my shirt.
You’ve hung your shirt here for two days.

When it means to kill (someone) by tying a rope attached from above around a person’s neck and removing the support from beneath, the past tense is hanged so is the past participe.
The military head of state hanged some nationalists.
They’ve all been hanged to death.
