TAG QUESTIONS
They are short questions attached to statements for clarification. We shall discuss the rules that guide the formation of such questions.
- A positive sentence should attract a negative tag question and a negative sentence should attract a positive tag question.
Note that for the purpose of this topic, a sentence is negative when it contains negators (no, not, never, hardly, scarcely), and not when it gives a negative or bad meaning. - When there is an auxiliary verb in a sentence (auxiliary verbs are verbs that support the action verbs), the auxiliary verb will be used to form the tag.
Examples:
Kunle is never listening,
Isn’t he? ✖️
Is he? ✔️
She is always eating in class.
Is she? ✖️
Isn’t she?✔️
