“GOOD” IN IDIOMS

  1. Do a good turn: If you do someone a good turn, you do something that helps or benefits them. This is why it is often said that one good turn deserves another: He did you a good turn by paying your school fees.
  2. A good sport: This is someone who does not get annoyed or angry when something is disappointing: A polygamist has to be a good sport to avoid enmity. The idiom also refers to someone who does not get angry about losing.
  3. For good: This expression means “forever” or “permanently”. It does not mean whether the action is good or bad:
I think she’s gone for good.
  4. Good riddance: You say ‘ good riddance’ to indicate that you are pleased that someone has left or that something has gone: They’ve left my house— good riddance!
  5. In (someone’s) good graces: You are in people’s good graces regarded when you are regarded favourably and with kindness by them:
She does everything she can to be in her dad’s good graces.
