  1. High and dry: If you say that you were left high and dry, you are emphasising that you were left in a difficult situation and were unable to do anything about it:

  2. Black and blue: This means to be badly bruised: The accident left him black and blue.
  3. Touch and go: If you say that something is touch and go, you mean that you are uncertain whether it will happen or succeed: She was so ill that her chance of survival was touch and go.
