IRREGULAR VERBS: HUNG or HANGED?

When “hang” means to fasten or support something at the top leaving the other parts free to move, or to be held in this way, the past tense and past participle is “hung”:
I’ve ~hanged~ my cost somewhere there (nonstandard).
I’ve *hung* my coat somewhere there (standard).

When “hang” means to kill someone, especially as punishment for a serious crime, by dropping them with a rope tied around their neck, or to die in this way, the past tense and past participle is “hanged”:
He was found guilty and ~hung~ to death (nonstandard).
He was found guilty and *hanged* to death (standard).
