Conjunctions link parts of a structure such as phrase, clause or a sentence in order to form a unified whole.
Types of conjunction
Coordinating: A coordinating conjunction joins elements of equal grammatical rank e.g., and, but, or, nevertheless, therefore, etc.
Subordinating: This connects clauses that are not typically equal. The functional sub-types include condition, reason, time, concession, contrast, etc.
Correlative: These are usually two related words that are used together to connect minor or major elements of a structure. There are many of them in English among which are:
Either…or
Neither…nor
Between…and
So…as
No sooner…than
Not only…but also
Scarcely…when, e.g.,:
No sooner had the party begun than it started raining.
Hardly had I left the venue when the chairman arrived.
The students are not only recalcitrant but also very rebellious.
