*The use of AND in subject-verb agreement*
1. When “and” joins two different nouns and/or pronouns, the verb will be plural.
My sister and I *were* there.
The teachers and the students *are* all invited.
2. When “and” joins two complementary nouns, the verb will be singular.
Bread and butter *is* good for breakfast.
Rice, salad, plantain and chicken *is* my favourite meal.
Two plus two *is* four.
3. When “and” joins two nouns referring to a single person or entity, the verb will be singular.
The Dean of Arts and professor of English *is* the keynote speaker.
The principal and Biology teacher *is* a great man.
NOTE: The second noun will not be preceded by any article (a, an or the). That makes it different from saying: The principal and the Biology teacher *are* great men.
