The hotel has a discount rate for ~newly wedded couples~ (nonstandard).
The hotel has a discount rate for newlyweds (standard). A recently married person is a newlywed.

I can’t find the ~second leg~ of my pair of shoes (nonstandard).
I can’t find the mate of my pair of shoes (standard). One of a pair of couples, animals or objects is called a mate.

He was killed by a ~straight bullet~ (nonstandard).
He was killed by a stray bullet (standard). A stray bullet is a bullet that, after being fired from a gun, hits an unintended target.
