COMMON ERRORS

I prefer beans ~than~ rice (nonstandard).
I prefer beans *to* rice (standard).

I know what’s wrong with ~the both~ of them (nonstandard).
I know what’s wrong with *both* of them (standard).
“Both” should not attract “the” in the context above.

He won the ~spelling bee competition~ (nonstandard).
He won the *spelling bee* (standard).
He won the *spelling competition* (standard).
A spelling bee is a competition in which children try to spell words correctly.
