COUPLE or COUPLES?

The ~couples~ were in London on honeymoon but the husband travelled to America afterwards (nonstandard).
The couple were in London on honeymoon but the husband travelled to America afterwards (standard).
Two people who are married or otherwise closely associated romantically or sexually are a couple. The word can only be pluralised if four or more persons are involved:
The six couples were invited to dance but Tobi and his wife were the outstanding couple. ✔️
