Words Spelt Differently but Pronounced the Same Way
Jail- gaol
Note that “gaol” is pronounced exactly like “jail” and they mean the same thing. While British English uses “jail”, Americans spell “gaol”.
Key- quay
Although “quay” means
a stone or metal platform lying alongside or projecting into water for loading and unloading ships, it is pronounced exactly like “key”.
Sweet- suite
Suite is a set of rooms designated for one person’s or family’s use or for a particular purpose. It is pronounced exactly as “sweet”.
You- ewe
Ewe is a female ship pronounced exactly like the pronoun “you”.
