FUNCTIONAL SHIFT IN WORD CLASSES
Language users should pay attention to how a word can be used as different word classes as illustrated with “like”:
She is my like (noun).
I like her (verb).
I responded in like manner (adjective).
He once had a car like mine (preposition).
I know people who change countries like they change homes (conjunction).
She stepped in, and she”s like “where is everybody” (adverb)?
Can you think of any word that you can make function as 5 different word classes?
