ONE RULE A DAY: MORE THAN

English for Today by Ganiu Abisoye Bamgbose (Dr GAB)

ONE RULE A DAY: MORE THAN

More than one student ~come~ here every morning (nonstandard).
More than one student comes here every morning (standard).

More than three students ~comes~ regularly (nonstandard).
More than three students come regularly (standard).

When “more than” is used in the subject position, the verb is determined by the noun that follows “more than”. This should not be mistaken for “one of” which is always followed by a plural noun/pronoun but attracts a singular verb:
One of the students comes here every morning (standard).
