QUOTATION MARKS IN USE
Quotation marks perform a number of functions, but this lesson is concerned with whether quotation marks should precede the full stop in a sentence or come after the full stop.
Note that, on the one hand, when the entire sentence is quoted, the quotation marks should come after the full stop:
“Life is what you make of it”.✖️
“Life is what you make of it.”✔️
On the other hand, when the quotation marks are used within a sentence, the quote should be closed and the sentence should be ended with an appropriate punctuation mark such as full stop or question mark:
Perspectives abound on context as a pragmatic concept and one of such perspectives is Odebunmi’s (2006:45) explanation of the term as “the spine of meaning.” ✖️
