He replied to my message later in the evening (standard).
He replied late in the evening (standard).

We ~arrived~ Lagos at 10pm (nonstandard).
We arrived in Lagos at 10pm.
We arrived at 10pm.

Note: The verbs will be followed by prepositions if a noun will come after them.
